To facilitate elements of the A61(s) road improvement scheme, I'm sorry to say seven trees and a number bushes had to be cleared on the junction of Church Street - Low Road. Overall, based on up to date information from Connecting Leeds, 34 established trees will be removed in Hunslet and Riverside Ward across the length of the A61(s) improvement works.
These improvements will lead to better local bus provision and to a more integrated cycle network. These will help to take cars off the road, reducing harmful air pollution locally and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. However, replacing the trees is a must do otherwise any environmental gains would be reduced by the loss of carbon capture from the established trees.
I'm happy the location for 49 replacement mature trees has already been found very near to Church Street slightly further along Low Road, in both directions. I've made it clear I expect a 3 for 1 ratio of replacement for all these trees with mature specimens to account for those established ones lost, and for all of these to be planted nearby.
Connecting Leeds have agreed to work towards this and I'm working with them and Leeds Parks and Country to identify locations in and around the residential areas of this section of Hunslet. This will take some time as we need to make sure the land we plant these on is suitable and sustainable for the new trees. I'm confident we can do this and have the planting done in the next tree planting season later this year. The current tree replacement sites are below.
